Snow Could Delay Syracuse-UConn Game

Jan 31, 2011 6:46 PM

Syracuse and Connecticut are scheduled to play at the XL Center in Hartford on Wednesday night, but a snow storm may threaten the game.

The area is supposed to be blanketed with snow and ice once again.

"Typically, once the teams and officials are on site, the game is played," UConn spokesman Kyle Muncy said in a statement.

"But, obviously, we are always in consultation with state and local officials in anything that relates to public safety, such as travel during inclement weather. It is almost always a decision that would get made the day of the game, so we would just encourage fans to stay tuned for updates, either at UConnHuskies.com or through the media. We understand that our fans are anxious about getting word and will do our best to keep them informed of any updates."

It's also National Signing Day and the Huskies plan to have a pre-game social hour with football coach Paul Pasqualoni in the Exhibition Hall.

As long as the basketball game is played, the football event will go on.

"The only reason we'd cancel it is if basketball is not on," said UConn associate director of athletics Mike Enright. "Because it's in the XL Center, the plan is to get people at the basketball game to see the football event. We wouldn't cancel the football event if the basketball game is on."

Louisville Outlasts UConn In Double-Overtime

Jan 29, 2011 3:50 PM

No. 19 Louisville outlasted No. 5 Connecticut in double-overtime at Gampel Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.

Peyton Siva scored 19 points, including two driving layups in the second overtime of the 79-78 win.

The Cardinals came back from a nine-point second-half deficit to snap a six-game winning streak by the Huskies.

Kemba Walker, who scored 20 points, missed a jumper at the end of regulation and a long three-pointer at the end of the second overtime that would have given the Huskies the win.

Darius Smith Considering Chicago State

Jan 21, 2011 4:11 PM

Former Connecticut guard Darius Smith is considering Chicago State, according to Scott Powers of ESPNChicago.com.

"Source says former UConn G Darius Smith could realistically end up at Chicago St. I have to think it's still a longshot, but it'd be a steal," Powers wrote on his Twitter page.

Smith announced last summer that he planned to transfer from the Huskies.

Walker: Basketball 'Saves' Calhoun

Jan 19, 2011 4:10 PM

Connecticut star Kemba Walker believes that basketball keeps Jim Calhoun, 68, going.

Less than a year removed from one of the most trying seasons of his coaching career, Calhoun is thriving again with the Huskies.

"He’s got a lot of fight in him," Walker said of Calhoun. "I think basketball saves him because he loves the game so much. He never wants to leave it. No matter what goes on, he’s always going to bounce back."

Calhoun has endured two bouts with cancer and went through recruiting violations last season.

"I know who I am," he said before the season. "I’ve got the same kind of integrity I’ve always had. This isn’t going to defeat me. Cancer, that’s not going to defeat me. You’re just not going to defeat me."

"I don't think anybody else is coming in."

The 6-foot-10, 260-pounder is a native of Middletown, Connecticut and says he doesn't have any visits scheduled.

Villanova To Force Familiar Woe In UConn's Walker

Jan 17, 2011 8:06 AM

Villanova coach Jay Wright knows quite a bit about Connecticut star Kemba Walker.

When the Wildcats and Huskies face off on Monday, Wright will be going against a player he coached last summer.

Wright was a co-coach of the USA Select team — college stars picked to scrimmage against the USA National team before their trip to Turkey for the World Championships.

“I know what he did for us against Kevin Durant, so now we have to go against him,” Wright said. “It’s scary.”

UConn has won 16 of their last 24 meetings against Villanova.

“I can’t wait. I’m looking forward to it,” Walker said. “I think we’re going to come with a lot of effort and intensity.”

Smith's 80-Foot Heave Could Have Doomed UConn

Jan 9, 2011 10:17 AM

Kemba Walker's overtime heroics against Texas on Saturday may have saved Connecticut forward Roscoe Smith from infamy.

With the scored tied at 73, UConn's Alex Oriakhi blocked a layup attempt by Gary Johnson. Smith grabbed the rebound, took one dribble and hurriedly heaved up an 80-footer to beat the buzzer.

The only problem was that there were 11 seconds left on the clock.

"I've seen a lot of things in my life," coach Jim Calhoun told reporters after the game. "I've never seen that. I never have, really."

Connecticut came up with another defensive stop and won in overtime.

"When I saw the clock, I thought there were two or three seconds left," Smith told the Hartford Courant. "My team -- man, they got on me in the locker room. I glanced at [the clock] and threw it up there. I just saw the clock going real fast."

Walker's Jumper Leads No. 9 UConn Past No. 12 Texas In OT

Jan 8, 2011 9:55 PM

Kemba Walker's jumper lifted No. 9 UConn to a victory over No. 12 Texas in overtime on Saturday afternoon.

Walker made a desperate from-the-hip three-pointer, then nailed the game-winner from about 15 feet with 5 seconds left for a tough 82-81 victory.

The 3-pointer came with a second left on the shot clock and put the Huskies ahead 80-77.

"I felt like I owed it to my team," Walker said of his effort in overtime. "I felt like I would get my shot and make it."

Walker, who finished with 22 points, had seven in overtime and shot 8-for-27 from the field.
